OFS Insights: Narratives That Drive Giving, Hiring, and Trust

In this episode of OFS Insights, produced in partnership with Our Fundraising Search, Mickey Desai is joined by Dave Paule and Ailena Parramore to explore a core truth for nonprofit leaders: facts inform, but stories decide. The conversation digs into how organizations can use accurate, credible storytelling to strengthen fundraising, improve leadership communication, and attract the right job candidates.

The guests explain why numbers alone rarely move people to action. Donors need more than service statistics; they need to understand the human impact behind the work. Leaders need to share not just vision and values, but the specific decisions, tradeoffs, and lessons that shape the organization. And in hiring, job descriptions can list responsibilities, but only authentic stories can reveal what it’s really like to work there.

Throughout the episode, the group emphasizes that effective storytelling must be accurate, ethical, and aligned with organizational reality. Stories should never replace evidence, exaggerate impact, or promise an experience the organization can’t deliver. Instead, they should help audiences understand purpose, context, and opportunity. Whether the goal is to inspire donors, build trust with staff, or attract aligned candidates, the key is the same: know your audience, tell the truth, and make the case with both data and narrative.

The episode also closes with Dave’s November cocktail feature: the Sidecar, a classic, elegant drink that serves as a fitting reminder that presentation matters just as much as ingredients.
